'Ibrahim – Where
in the Spectrum Does He Belong?’ is the story of Shahidun Rahman
and her son, Ibrahim, and tells the story of a mother’s struggle
to bring up a child with a learning disorder.
Shahidun was born in Cambridge on 14th December 1971, two days before Bangladesh (formerly East Pakistan) became independent. Her father arrived in England in 1957 hoping to start a restaurant and, once the business was successful, her mother joined him in 1963 and they settled in Cambridge. Ibrahim Hamzah Rahman was born on 19th December 1990 at the Rosie Maternity Hospital in Cambridge. He was a normal, healthy boy and weighed 5lb 15oz. His father was not able to gain entry to England until October 1991 so he did not see his son until he was 10 months old. This was a new experience for the whole family and many adjustments had to be made. Ibrahim suffered from Semantic Pragmatic Language Disorder and had difficulties with his gross and motor skills. Ibrahim’s journey from birth to his teenage years was fraught with problems as he struggled through school. He now has two brothers and a sister. His brothers also experienced delayed speech; but luckily neither of them have developed a language disorder. Copyright
